18-year-old student Andreas of Denmark is looking to make a living in graphic design/web development. In his spare time, Andreas creates football designs in low polygon, minimalist and retro styles. A Manchester United supporter who has visited Old Trafford twice in his lifetime, he opened an Etsy shop in the Christmas time of 2015, delivering prints to all parts of the world. A different sort of designer to who I’ve previously interviewed, I spoke with Andreas to find out more.
What got you into graphic design?
"It’s actually difficult for me to explain, as I’ve always been interested in creating digital content. I think my interest in graphic design might have started when I was running a YouTube channel back when I was around 12 or something. I made my own thumbnails, intros and basically just video content. My main tools around there were Adobe Photoshop and Sony Vegas."
You’ve produced some fantastic work in low poly, minimalist and retro designs, but which of these styles do you enjoy doing the most?
"Obviously the low polygon work takes many hours when you do it manually in Adobe Illustrator. It might not be the design process that I like the most when making the triangles, but the outcome makes it work it worth it one hundred percent."
On your Etsy shop, which graphics were most popular?
"My retro posters were really popular at the Christmas time of 2015. I got a lot of enquiries about custom work, such as some personal Arsenal posters to a fan with a season ticket to whom I sold. The whole process of getting contacted by his wife was amazing, and she also sent me a picture of him holding it."
What is your favourite design you have made?
"It might not be the most popular design I’ve made, but a personal favourite has to be the Vardy low polygon design I made in their season, where they went on to win the Premier League. I spent many hours on it and think the expression of Vardy came out really well."
Which other designers do you admire?
"There is a lot to choose from and I’m sure I will miss someone. The guy who probably got me into making football graphics was @FootyGraphics and he helped me a lot, especially in the early stages. He even shared his screen to show some of his methods! Another person I designer I admire is @HannahCDesigns, who has some incredible United posters on her Etsy shop. @daveflanagan is someone I’ve always looked up to with his really original and unique style (sadly he supports the wrong team in Manchester). @ellsharpdesigns is an illustrator that I’ve only known for a couple of months, but the passion and desire he has for his work is something you can only get inspired of. Which of your designs has gained the most popularity, either over Twitter or Behance.
"I made a ‘Pogboom’ design when Paul was announced in summer 2016. I think that’s my most popular design on my Twitter page and it also got a good response on Instagram. The design itself was inspired by the great Dave Flanagan."
As a Manchester United fan, how was your experience of Old Trafford, and what is your favourite moment at the club.
"The first time I visited Old Trafford was in 2013 where Moyes was in charge, and it was probably the best experience of my life. I’ve always watched United because my dad is a huge fan of them. I can’t describe the feeling I got when I entered the stadium, it was just unreal to be there and visit the museum with all the history. Unfortunately, they lost 2-1 to West Brom the first time and won 1-0 against Aston Villa the second, where Louis van Gaal was the manager."
Recently, you’ve worked more in designing website and brand identity. How are you trying to make your style of design unique? Also, what would you say is key to a brand identity?
"I really like doing football designs, but I also want to go in a direction that I can use for my future job. I’m a bit of a nerd, so I like creating digital things on the computer, which is why I got into web development. I think that the most important thing about branding is to make it simple, minimalistic and recognisable. I always tell myself “Keep it simple, stupid.” At the moment I’m trying to build up a portfolio for when I’m done with my design class in college."
What other (if any) digital products are you looking to offer as a service?
"I offer three main services at the moment, but I’m also flexible and up for a challenge. Brand identity, responsive websites and social media design are what I enjoy doing the most, but I’m also trying out new things like UI (user interface) and UX (user experience) designs."
You’re a frequent Adobe apps user. How comfortable are you with these tools?
"As I mentioned earlier, I’ve used Adobe Photoshop for a long time, which is the tool I’m most comfortable with. I then learned software like Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign, which is easier to learn when you’ve tried Photoshop before.
At the start of 2017, I bought the Webflow software app, which helps you create dynamic and responsive websites without code. I do know the basics of HTML and CSS, but I think the future is in Webflow as it saves you so much time when running a business."
My comment: "Andreas really catches the eye with his low-poly and other styled art. It is even more impressive that he is looking to combine his work of graphics and web design, and I think Andreas could increase his following instantly."
